Bustard Downs
Bustard Downs offers bush luxury self-contained accommodation at our renovated Guesthouse. Accommodation sleeps 2 to 8 Guests in 4 seperate air conditioned King Bedrooms. We recommend minimum 2 nights stay to soak in the views, experience the birding and a little of the slow-life.
Bustard Downs is a 220acre working farm producing polled Brahman cattle using low stress natural sustainable farming methods rotating cattle to manage tropical growth and benefit soil fertility whilst conserving the endemic flora and fauna including 160+ species of birds. Located in Tropical dry Savannah country between Mt. Molloy and Mt. Carbine, with sweeping views to world heritage rainforest Mt. Lewis and Daintree National Parks.
The Australian Bustard starts displaying mid to late August and continues until the rains/wet season arrives. You can hear the Bustard roar in Spring and Summer. In the very dry months the Bustards often wonder around the Homestead and Guesthouse gardens. Northern Fantail, Black-throated Finch, a favourite in Winter/Spring Red-tailed Black Cockatoo, Red-winged Parrots always appear well before the Mangos are ripe and they and the Rainbow Lorikeet’s are our Mango ripe testers, every morning they come and test the Mango, then fly off, when they stay to eat, thats when you pick the Mangos. We love seeing couples of Pale-headed Rosella’s, Restless Flycatcher, Peaceful, Emerald and Diamond Dove, Barred Cuckoo-shrike, Scarlet, Yellow, Dusky, Brown, Brown-backed, Macleay’s, Bridled, Blue-faced and White-cheeked Honeyeaters, look for the Nightjar and Bush Stone-Curlew if going out night time wildlife spotting.
